What Is Backtesting?

Backtesting asks a simple question: if you had followed clear rules on past data, what would have happened? Learn how to use that answer wisely.

Educational content only. Not investment advice.

What you will learn

  • Definition and purpose
  • Rules, metrics and review
  • Backtest vs forward practice
  • Overfitting and look-ahead bias
  • What a “good” result still misses
  • How BRBStox supports testing

Backtesting Defined

Backtesting applies a written set of entry, exit and risk rules to historical market data to estimate how the approach might have performed. It is a research tool—not a promise that the future will match the past.

What You Need Before You Click Run

  • Clear entry and exit conditions (no “I’ll know it when I see it”)
  • Stop, target or time-based exit rules
  • Position sizing / risk per trade assumptions
  • Markets and timeframes you actually trade
  • A plan for costs: brokerage, slippage and spreads where relevant

Metrics Beyond Win Rate

  • Net P&L and expectancy
  • Max drawdown
  • Trade count and sample size
  • Average win vs average loss
  • Behaviour in trend vs range periods
  • Stability across different market years

Common Pitfalls

  • Overfitting — tuning rules until the past looks perfect and the future breaks
  • Look-ahead bias — accidentally using information that wasn’t available at decision time
  • Ignoring costs — turning a thin edge into a loss after fees
  • Tiny samples — judging a system on too few trades
  • Skipping discretionary review — never inspecting individual trades for rule errors

Backtest → Replay → Paper → Live

A healthy pipeline often runs: define rules → backtest → review with Market Replay → paper trade → small live size. BRBStox Backtesting Lab is built around that research loop so ideas earn trust instead of relying on hindsight charts.

Test Ideas Properly

Move From Hindsight to Evidence

Define rules, run historical tests in the Backtesting Lab, then stress-check decisions with Market Replay before you scale.
